Local Kitchen
Despite being a small country, each area of Lithuania has its unique ways in the kitchen. History has had a large part to play in the development of its unique cuisine. Having come under the influence of the English, Germans, Dutch, Prussians and French, Klaipeda's kitchens have borrowed a little from all of them. The fish preparations are famous in Klaipeda and everyone who has had it vouches for the fact that no one prepares fish the way Klaipėda residents make it.
Coffee drinking is popular and Klaipeda even had a coffee drinking ceremony once. Quite often, coffee is served with homemade cakes with a variety of filling such as cottage cheese, jam or fruit. As an integral part of the socialising, ladies would visit each other, bringing with them samples of their homemade cakes.
Before the World Wars, Klaipeda had a formidable reputation of having some of the best restaurants in Europe, which had their own summer and winter gardens. Klaipeda's clubs are genteel and sophisticated and have excellent kitchens which serve the best food. Beautiful promenade paths lead to the beach areas of Melnragę, Girulius, and Tauralauki, which have inviting cafes offering good afternoon tea and coffee.
